The 4-day Negotiation Workshop

Most lawyers, irrespective of their specialty, must negotiate. Yet most lawyers have devoted little organized thinking and experience to understanding the negotiation process and the approaches and techniques available to them. This course is designed for attorneys at all levels who want to hone their negotiation skills and develop a more effective set of responses. By combining theory and practice, we will aim to improve both your understanding of negotiation and your effectiveness as negotiator.
The workshop will provide you with a conceptual framework for analyzing, preparing for, and conducting negotiations. While we will teach from a variety of research traditions and perspectives, the main organizing frameworks will be drawn from several groundbreaking books written by Harvard Law School faculty. As a participant in the workshop you will be introduced to the theory of negotiation developed in these texts. This approach seeks to teach lawyers the value of negotiating from a principled or problem-solving position.
The course is structured around a series of lectures, case studies, and group de-briefings. You will negotiate in groups and one-on-one. The course will use case study materials developed at the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School. After participants negotiate each case, the instructors will lead the class in a structured review designed to pull out the main learning points.
Our schedule is intensive and it is important for yourself and the rest of the group, that you sign up for and participate for the full time. If you have to be absent during the course, you will probably have a flashback from your schooldays - you will have to inform your teachers! You will spend much of your time engaged in negotiation exercises (as negotiators, third parties, and observers) and in reviewing and critiquing what worked, what did not, and why.
There will be some homework each night (minimum one hour day 1 and 2 and more on day 3) and it is up to you if you choose to do your preparations alone or with people you meet on the course. You can stay behind on the premises after class to do your preperations. We will provide the proper facilities - both the space and refreshments - you will need to go "the extra mile".
An additional takeaway from the course is a copy of the brand new book "Conflict Resilience" by Robert Bordone and Joel Salinas.
The number of participants is limited, so first come - first served!
